Our road trip to the Sahara Desert (Part I)

Our
trip to the desert began after spending 3 days in Marrakech Here, my
husband's dream was to be in the desert and that was the best occasion, but he
did not want to do it with an organized guide or trip, he wanted to rent a car
and go to the adventure..
In
Marrakech we have contacted an agency to rent the car (a 4x4) the price was 450
Dh/ day (45 €/day) and 5000 Dh bail ..
We
have arranged with them the day and time of delivery of the car and the place.
That's where our journey began!
Nuestro viaje al desierto empezó después de estar 3
días en Marrakech Aqui, Mi
marido tenía muchas ganas de estar en el desierto y esa era la mejor ocasión,
pero no quería hacerlo con un guía o viaje organizado, él quería alquilar
un coche y ir a la aventura.
En Marrakech hemos contactado con una agencia para alquilar el
coche (un 4x4) el precio era 450 Dh/Día (45€/Día) y 5000 Dh de fianza..
Hemos concertado con ellos el día y la hora de la entrega del
coche y el lugar y ahí empezó nuestro viaje.
Day 1: Marrakech-
Ait Ben Haddou- Ourzazate
Crossing
the Tizi n' Tichka mountain pass, one of the most spectacular roads in the
country. Almost 200 km of a beautiful road, though somewhat dangerous, it
reaches 1300 m above sea level. When you descend through the High
Atlas to “the other side” it feels you’ve arrived in another planet.
Everything
changes. The climate, the air, the smell, the colors, the landscape, the
people..
Cruzamos el paso de montaña Tizi n 'Tichka, uno de los caminos más espectaculares del país. En unos tramos puedes alcanzar los 1300 m sobre el nivel del mar. Cuando bajas por el Alto Atlas hacia "el otro lado", sientes que has llegado a otro planeta.

After more than 3 hours driving we have
arrived to Ksar Ait-Ben-Haddou is a
typical example
of the Berber traditional architecture. Walking through the ‘streets’ and under
(kasbah) passes you get a small glimpse of how life once was. Although most of
population moved out of ksar, there are still few families
there living and working.
Después de más de 3 horas conduciendo llegamos a “Ksar Ait-Ben-Haddou” .Es un ejemplo típico de la arquitectura tradicional bereber. Caminando por las callejuelas vas a tener una idea de cómo era la vida antes. Aunque la mayoría de la población se mudó, todavía hay pocas familias que viven y trabajan allí.
Algunas de las películas realizadas aquí son Lawrence of Arabia, Indiana Jones, Gladiator y recientemente Juego de Tronos, temporada 3.

Como ya os había dicho no teníamos el viaje súper
organizado. Solíamos levantarnos por la mañana, cogíamos el coche y a la aventura, y a
lo largo del día vamos reservando los hoteles dependiendo donde nos tocara dormir. Camino a Ourzazate (que está a unos 30 km) reservamos un hotel en
booking Hotel Azoul 26€ la noche.
Day 2: Ourzazate -

Ourzazate: It is a quiet city Known as
“The Gate to the Desert” or “The Moroccan Hollywood”
A must visit to
the movie Studios (Atlas Studios, entry 50 dh/person,
8:30am till 6pm – depending on the season) Thanks to its amazing
landscapes, Ouarzazate became very popular among movies producers! Starting
from “Gladiator” and “Jesus from Nazareth”, "Cleopatra".Everyday modern productions like
The Game of Thrones, Mission Impossible, Alexander or Prince of Persia use this
part of Morocco’s gorgeous features for their shootings.
Ourzazate: Es una ciudad tranquila conocida como "La puerta
del desierto" o "El Hollywood marroquí"
Una visita obligada a “Atlas Studios” (entrada 50 Dh / persona, 8:30 am a 6 pm, dependiendo de la temporada) Gracias a sus increíbles paisajes, Ouarzazate se
hizo muy popular entre los productores de películas. Algunas películas que se
rodaron son "Gladiator" y "Jesús de Nazaret", Juego
de Tronos, Misión Imposible, Alexander o Prince of Persia.
The Sahara desert is still 300 km away ,but honestly you can feel it in the air!

El desierto del Sahara está a 300 km de distancia,
pero sinceramente, ¡puedes sentirlo en el aire!
The
route from Marrakech to the Merzouga desert is known as the route of the
thousand Kasbahs. “Kasbat Touarirt” was one of
those that we have seen. It was once an important kasbah in the country’s
trading history with rest of Africa. What I like most here is that only a
portion was carefully restored and the rest are genuine parts of the old days.
Inside, you’ll
find small rooms, narrow alleys and stairwells all the way up.
If you explore it
alone, you might be lost in a maze of doors and small rooms.
La ruta de Marrakech al desierto de Merzouga es conocida como la ruta de las mil Kasbahs.
Kasbat Touarirt fue una de las que hemos visto. Está fue muy importante en la historia comercial del país con el resto de África. Lo que más me gustó es que solo una parte fue cuidadosamente restaurada y el resto está tal cual como era.
Adentro, encontrarás pequeñas habitaciones, callejones
estrechos y escaleras hasta arriba.
Si haces la visita solo (sin guía) es posible que te
pierdas en un laberinto de puertas y habitaciones pequeñas.

Kalaat Mgouna: 90 km from Ouarzazate it is a small town known as the valley of roses for the cultivation of roses to create water and the essence of Rosa, used in cosmetics and food. Here we can see where and how the roses are distilled and we can buy the products of roses, with BIO certification.
It is also famous
for its Festival of Roses that is celebrated in
May and coincides with the collection of the Roses of Damascus.
Kalaat Mgouna: a 90 Km de Ourzazate se encuentra esta pequeña ciudad conocida como el valle de rosas por el cultivo de rosas para crear el agua y la esencia de Rosa, utilizada en cosmética y alimentación. Aquí visitamos una cooperativa para ver dónde y cómo se destilan las rosas y se pueden comprar los productos derivados de esta, con certificación BIO.
También es famosa por su Festival de las Rosas que se celebra en Mayo y coincide con la recolección
de las Rosas de Damasco.

The beginning of
the Dades Gorges is just a few
kilometers after the town Boumalne Dades. The Gorge is 45 km long and formed
with the most dramatic red rocks formations. You have to know that the
red-colored walls of the Dades Gorge range up to 500 meters! So it was an
amazing experience driving this spectacular road inside the Dades Gorge. We
passed interesting Berber villages and stopped at some viewpoints to inhale the
dramatic landscapes. The contrast between this red rock colors, the green oasis
with the palm groves was immense.
El comienzo de Las Gargantas Dades se encuentra a pocos kilómetros después de la ciudad de Boumalne Dades. Las Gargantas tienen 45 km de longitud y sus paredes tienen una altura de hasta 500 metros! Así que fue una experiencia increíble conducir en esta espectacular carretera dentro de Las Gragantas. Pasamos muchos pueblos bereberes y nos detuvimos en algunos puntos con vistas y paisajes espectaculares . El contraste entre estos colores de roca roja y el oasis verde con palmeras era inmenso.

Driving
Morocco’s famous zig zag road by car was quite adventurous but perfectly safe.
After a set of hairpins turns, you will get rewarded with stunning views from
the top.
Conducir en la famosa carretera zigzag de Marruecos en coche era bastante aventurero pero muy seguro. Una vez terminadas las curvas la recompensa era unas impresionantes vistas desde la parte superior.

Hay muchos lugares para fotografiar al lado del camino del desfiladero. Después, hicimos una parada en los "dedos de mono",una magnífica formación rocosa a solo 9 km de Boumalne Dades.

Tinghir es una ciudad con una población de alrededor
de 44.000 habitantes y se encuentra en el centro de uno de los oasis más
impresionantes del sur de Marruecos. Al llegar a Tinghir hicimos una parada en un punto con unas vistas impresionantes. El paisaje era increíblemente
hermoso y, sinceramente, era uno de los oasis más bellos que habíamos visto
hasta ahora.
The town is not just known for its immense green palmeries but is also the entrance to the popular Todra Gorge. The canyon is dramatically beautiful and the road is one of the most spectacular

La ciudad no solo es conocida por sus inmensas palmeras verdes, sino que también es la entrada a la popular Garganta del Todra.
The Todra Gorges is about 15 km long and the drive inside is really beautiful. The red deep cliffs beside the Todra River have an average height of about 400 meters which makes it one of the most spectacular canyons around the world.
The gorge with its
huge rocks is very popular for rock climbers all over the world. Hundreds of
climbing routes were made inside the red solid limestone walls.
The most
impressive part are the last 600 meters at the end of the Todra Gorges. With
just 10 meters from one wall to the other the canyon becomes
really narrow.
To avoid the crowds you should explore the gorge in the morning or late afternoon, when the buses are gone.
El desfiladero de las Gargantas de Todra tiene aproximadamente 15 km de largo. Los profundos acantilados rojos junto al río Todra tienen una altura media de unos 400 metros, lo que lo convierte en uno de los cañones más espectaculares del mundo.
Esas gargantas son muy conocidas por los escaladores
de todo el mundo.
La parte más impresionante son los últimos 600 metros
al final de Todra Gorges es el punto más estrecho del cañón con solo 10
metros de una pared a la otra,
Para evitar las aglomeraciones, es mejor visitarlas por la mañana o al final de la tarde, cuando los autobuses ya no están.

Day 4: Merzouga Desert
The 200 km from Tinghir to Merzouga had been quite long, but the landscapes are becoming more and more impressive the closer you get there.
On this trip we
have made some stops in Erdoud and Rissani, they are small cities without
tourist interest but we had to stop to eat and buy spices in one of their
traditional markets
Los 200 km de Tinghir a Merzouga habían sido bastante largos, pero los paisajes son cada vez más impresionantes, cuanto más te acercas al desierto.
En este trayecto hemos hecho unas paradas en Erdoud y
Rissani. Son pequeñas ciudades sin interés turístico pero teníamos que parar
para comer y comprar especias en uno de sus mercados tradicionales.
We have arrived in the afternoon at the house of our Desert Camp (in Merzouga), We got a cozy room for taking a shower and leaving our luggage. Sadly we didn't have the chance to walk and see around because we didn't have time and we wanted to arrive to the Erg Chebbi camp.

Here comes the
funniest part- camel riding- a grupo of camels laying on sand was waiting
for us.
Note: Riding a
camel was a great fun, but also not the most comfortable one. So you
better wear good clothes (long trousers, turban, and comfortable underwear).
Hemos llegado por la tarde a la casa de nuestro "Desert Camp" (en Merzouga). Nos dieron una habitación para duchar y dejar nuestro equipaje. Lamentablemente no tuvimos la oportunidad de ver la ciudad porque no teníamos tiempo y queríamos llegar al campamento de Erg Chebbi.
Hemos llegado por la tarde a la casa de nuestro "Desert Camp" (en Merzouga). Nos dieron una habitación para duchar y dejar nuestro equipaje. Lamentablemente no tuvimos la oportunidad de ver la ciudad porque no teníamos tiempo y queríamos llegar al campamento de Erg Chebbi.
Y llegó la parte más divertida ,montar en camello para ir al campamento
Nota: Montar en camello fue muy divertido, pero no es cómodo así que es mejor llevar ropa cómoda, pantalones largos y turbantes.(No como yo)
We reached the
camp in the dark and we were greeted with sweet mint tea and nuts, they showed
us our tents. After that we had dinner and we had been watching the stars which
we had never been seen so close before. A “once in your lifetime experience". Really that night was full of magic.
Al llegar al campamento nos recibieron con té y
frutos secos.Nos enseñaron nuestras carpas/Jaimas. Después de eso cenamos y
subimos a una duna para ver las estrellas (nunca antes las habíamos
visto tan cerca).
In the next morning we continued the tradition to wake up early but this time with a great purpose to watch the sunrise. It was absolutely worth it though; the view was just breathtaking – sand dunes without an end.

para ver el amanecer.
Las vistas eran impresionantes: dunas de arena sin
fin. Una experiencia única en la vida.
After we got picked up with a 4×4 and we went to the village Khamlia where we enjoyed the spiritual Gnawa music , it is a combination of ritual poetry and traditional singing and dancing.
Después nos recogieron con un 4×4 y fuimos al pueblo Khamlia donde disfrutamos de la música espiritual Gnawa. Es una combinación de poesía ritual y baile tradicional.
Later we visited the black volcanic rocks desert; our guide taught us how to find beautiful minerals and fossils. With the 4×4 we passed some tiny Berber villages, nomads and also the mines of Mefis. All the time we had a panoramic view of golden dunes near the Algerian border – that was fantastic!
Luego fuimos al desierto negro de rocas volcánicas. Nuestro guía
nos enseñó cómo encontrar hermosos minerales y fósiles. Con el 4×4 pasamos
algunos pueblos bereberes y nómadas, y también las minas Mfis de plomo y Zinc (están cerca de la frontera con Argelia). Las minas eran campos de trabajos de los franceses. Aquí se obtenía
el popular kohl, del polvo molido de la galena, un maquillaje que se aplica en
los ojos.
